Handed over to the Chinese government in the early 1950’s, it was used as offices and warehouses by successive tenants who left it in poor condition. In 2017, the Utahloy Education Foundation took over the building with the mission of restoring it to its former glory and developing an adaptive reuse for educational purpose in the field of Arts.
Resorting to various architects and art professors from Guangzhou University, the restoration took five years with full respect for its historical design, materials and features. By spring 2022, the Art Institute of the Orient opened to pursue its mission and become an educational institution in the field of Arts.
